James Kuntz grew up on Chebeague Island — a tight-knit fishing community in Casco Bay where long hours, resilience, and pride in your work aren't values you're taught in a classroom. They're just how things are done. His family lobstered for a living, and from an early age James learned what it meant to show up when the weather was bad, to fix things yourself when you couldn't afford not to, and to earn people's trust through action, not words.

That upbringing — hauling traps at 4am, maintaining gear, solving problems with whatever you had on hand — became the DNA of Southern Maine Mechanical. James built the company from nothing, combining the blue-collar work ethic of his island roots with modern HVAC and plumbing expertise built through years of hands-on field work.

He's known for taking on challenging projects — the ones other contractors decline — and for treating customers the way people on a small island treat each other: fairly, honestly, and with the expectation that your reputation follows you everywhere you go.
